UnitConverterKit converts between units. Every figure on the site — the converter, the tables, the worked examples — is computed from one table of exact conversion factors, so two pages cannot disagree about the same conversion.

Why the notes matter

Most converters hand you a number and stop. That is fine until the number is not what you assumed. A US cup, an imperial cup and a metric cup are three different sizes. The calorie on food packaging is a thousand of the calories physicists use. A drive sold as 1 TB reports about 931 GB. Mach 1 is slower in cold air. Three different horsepowers are in daily use and they disagree with each other.

So every unit here carries a line saying what it actually is: exact by definition, an average, or something that shifts with conditions. Where a conversion is a definition we say so. Where it is a convention that varies, we say that instead of printing twelve digits and implying certainty we do not have.

Mistakes

If a number here is wrong, it is wrong on every page at once, because they all come from the same table — which also means one correction fixes all of them. Tell us and we will fix it.
